Five Sentence Fiction

This week I'm trying something new. Over at Lillie McFerrin Writes, every week she posts a one word inspiration and anyone willing to participate can write a five sentence story based on that prompt. I thought it sounded like fun, so I decided to give it a try. Here is my five sentence story based on this week's prompt: Tears.

I wouldn't let him see me cry. He didn't deserve something as cliched as my tears. He'd made his choice, and now it was time for me to make mine. I stood up and turned to leave. I didn't look back as I walked away.

  1. That's amazing how you're able to capture so much emotion and storyline in only 5 sentences!!!

  2. Nice! Tightly packed closure. Never tried the five-sentence concept. But I recognize the idea that, by constraint, we are somehow more free to create. I am working myself up to do the storyaday.org challenge in May, so this could come in handy. (Dropping by from the April Platform Challenge..) -K

    1. This was my first time with it too, and you're right, the constraint of having only five sentences was actually very freeing. It reminds me of Hemingway and his six word story: "Baby Shoes. For sale. Never worn." Only a genius like that could create such powerful imagery in only six words.

  3. Good job, Melanie. And good for your character for walking away with her pride intact!

  4. Five sentences is a great idea. I might check out that blog and have a read. :)

You certainly made good use of your five lines. Vivid and tense.

  5. Its so tempting to pack as much as you POSSIBLY can in your five sentences... I love how your's are all short and to the point. I can totally understand the character's way of thinking... I don't think in long sentences. ;)

    Great piece!! :)

  7. Very consice, to the point and neatly done. I like it! Short sentences can create so much atmosphere, better than the loger ones. I may have to try this; if I'm brave enough. xx
